london based label ism serves up a massive ep with three tracks from russian disco producer volta cab, all of which offer some seriously downtempo grooves. >play on< and >magic in your eyes< nail the classic sub 110bpm disco sound with its lush live instrumentation. however its the shining 80s feel of >hes a bad mutha< that is the most impressive, melding a sleazy vocal with a heart-rending combination of synths and horns. label bosses yam who? offer two remixes, with their version of >play on< a cosmic uptempo version of the original, with an ascending synth bass that elevates the original vocal to new heights. their remix of >hes a bad mutha< adds a similar amount of extra dancefloor kick, removing the originals yearning melody for something a little more forceful.

behind nomaton hides one of uppsalas true techno veterans. erik möller made himself a global name in the beginning of 2000 as the stripped down house musics champion with releases on labels including force tracks and sub static. he has played all over the world - from ibiza to tbilisi, and the audience at the legendary berlin clubs ostgut and watergate has been able to dance to his live sets. as unai his subtle technopop was hailed by all sorts of camps: from new york times to the wire, from house-djs to to pop connoisseurs. as he now comes forward with a new name, it is very much a return to roots. with nomaton he takes us on a trip to the dark heart of techno. a heavy-bass thumping heart full of dirty basslines, grinding rhythms and ecstatic minimalism.

simoncino (aka nick anthony) from italian super edit label no more hits crosses the atlantic and finds a new home with on the prowls sub-label party breaks. what immediately stands out upon first listen is the production style, not being able to tell what is a sample and what has been replayed... much like tensnakes mega hit. the simoncino sound is firmly rooted in proto-house and 80s r&b. with ingredients like ancient drum machines, arpeggiated melodies, and cheap 80s pads, his concoction boils over with a certain cheekiness that makes listeners grin from ear to ear. all four tracks are subtle hits in their own right. excellent ep!
